My story

I started practicing Ashtanga and Anusara yoga while in graduate school. Yoga gave me the ability to listen to my inner voice and practice being my authentic self, something I see as a lifelong practice. I completed my 200-hour yoga teacher training with Sri Yoga in San Francisco in 2013 where, among other things, I learned about the history of yoga and how to teach from an authentic voice.

I live in Scotts Valley with my husband and our dog and two cats. I am also a DJ at a local college radio station and love learning about new artists and new ways of being creative. I’m a native Californian and I love traveling and seeing new places. I like running and have completed several 5Ks, 10Ks, and two half marathons.

My classes incorporate poses (asana), breathwork (pranayama), and meditation. I see yoga as a practice of self-discovery and healing trauma. Teaching combines my two passions: education and yoga.

I believe that everyone has the ability to do yoga. All you need is the willingness to try new things and the desire to learn more about yourself.

Getting started

The purpose of Hatha yoga is to get to the mind through the body. Becoming fully aware of your physical environment assists the practitioner in knowing their Self. Yoga can be intimidating for some and that’s okay. That is why it is “practice,” as there is no end-game. No matter what amount of experience you have, please ask questions! Also, please inform me about any physical issues you may have. There isn’t anything that we can’t work with.

During class you can expect breathing and movement to be cued. You will sit still or hold poses for a while and you may move quickly, too. If something feels demanding or hurts, please stop! There are no judgments here. My goal is to provide a safe space for you to practice in. As far as equipment, you only need a mat, water, and comfortable clothes.

I’m looking forward to seeing you in class!

Kids yoga

Kids can benefit from yoga in many ways. Yoga increases body awareness and teaches self-soothing skills that they can use for the rest of their lives. In a kids yoga class we sing songs, play games, and practice age-appropriate yoga poses in a safe and non-judgemental environment. We also talk about emotions and awareness in an effort to develop mindfulness. Breathing and meditation is also taught in a fun way that keeps kids interested. I have experience teaching all ages, from kindergarten to high school. I enjoy teaching kids because of their honesty and fearlessness.

Private lessons

Public yoga class is not a one-size-fits-all experience so private classes are a great way to develop your practice and learn more about yourself. With one-on-one attention I can help you find your yoga swiftly and with ease. Contact me for details.

Some things my students have said:

"Hilary incorporates all the elements I’m looking for in a yoga class: breath work, meditation, relaxation, and body awareness. She gives individual attention without being intrusive and encourages her students to ultimately trust their own bodies. I highly recommend Hilary’s classes for a balanced, enjoyable experience of bringing the mind and body into a more harmonious communication." -J.R.
